She’s the coupon queen here in Pittsburgh. LaTasha is well known for her frugally fantastic personality and the luxurious looks she creates at her beauty salon. I’ve only heard and seen great things from LaTasha. We recently met face-to-face for the first time and I instantly recognized that there’s a lot I can learn from this mama. The dish that she brought to my home for our last Mom’s Night Out (click here to learn more) was creative, fun and quite tasty. LaTasha is the owner of the Pittsburgh beauty salon, Luxurious Looks and the mom of two girls. Let’s meet this #GoodMama!
1. What makes you a #GoodMama?
I am a Good mama because I recognize the gifts I was given when I gave birth to 2 healthy beautiful daughters. At age 21, my life went from being selfish to selfless. I realized my decisions had to be made around my children. patience, love, loyalty, and commitment has enabled me to meet the necessary needs of my children. Those needs do not mean always giving, giving, giving, but includes teaching them respect, values, good morals, standards, and teaching them about God-Jesus Christ.
2. How do your feelings about motherhood differ from when you first became a mom?
When I first became a mom I thought it was going to be easy. Diapers, bottles, baths, cute outfits, her Gerber smile and consistent sleep schedule Never did I imagine the pouring out of myself that it would take to become a good mother. I also recognized being a mother was going be a continued learning process and experience. Every child is different. Every child develops and grows, and their mindset and personality changes throughout the various stages of life.
3. What advice would you give to a new mom?
My advice to new moms is that there is no manual or handbook. We all make mistakes, but we learn from our mistakes. We all get overwhelmed, but you can develop patience. Be Strong, use all your resources, don’t get offended or refuse help from others. As my grandma would say, “Watch, protect, and love your kids because they do grow up to live their own life. We want to make sure we equip them to be ready for the world.”
4. Has there been anytime during your motherhood journey where you faced obstacles? How did you overcome them?
After being with my children’s father for 8 years and deciding to go our separate ways, I had to take on the entire load of motherhood by myself. I was raised in a home with 2 parents, I wanted the same lifestyle for my kids. It made me stronger, a good decision maker and I was determined to be the best parent i could be.
To all moms: Never give up on your personal dreams, and goals. When the road gets tough, Never Give Up! A breakthrough is coming!
I continued my personal journeys with 2 daughters, I was able to obtain a Cosmetology license, Cosmetology instructor license, an Associates degree, and open my own Beauty Salon. I still have more goals to obtain.
5. Name one thing Americans would be surprised to know about African-American mothers.
We carry the burden of life and still continue to smile!!!
6. What is the number one lesson you have learned from motherhood?
As a single mom of 2 daughters, I’ve learned the importance of a work-life balance. My positive attitude keeps me grounded. I’ve learned that everything I do has a direct effect on the development of my children.
7. What is your proudest mommy moment?
My proudest mommy moments are Everything!!! Especially those milestones, first steps, potty training, the hugs, sloppy kisses, and knowing I have the power to cure all boo-boos with a kiss. The quality time, the talks, acting like a big kid, and the love my children give back to Me. I love and cherish every moment!!!!
