New to Pittsbugh?

Brown Mamas’ Welcomes You to Pittsburgh!

So, you’ve moved to the Steel City with kids in tow.  I know the feeling.  When my husband and I returned to the ‘Burgh with our 3 boys, I wasn’t sure where to turn either.   Well, you’re in the right place. Moms moving to Pittsburgh can count on Pittsburgh Brown Mamas to help them meet other moms, find fun stuff to do with their families and get adjusted to the nation’s most livable and family friendly city.   Here are a few tidbits of info to get you started on your journey toward kid-first parenting and living in the City of Pittsburgh.

  1. FIRST, SUBSCRIBE!  Join our newsletter so that you can stay up-to-date on PBM meet-ups, stay inspired about your new move, and get parenting tips and advice in your inbox.
  2. Stay-at-home moms, working moms, female business owners, the members of Pittsburgh Brown Mamas are diverse. On any given day moms in our Private Facebook group are trading baby clothes, getting advice on which doctor to use or having a conversation about when to have “The Talk” with their tween.  Find like-minded moms by joining the PBM’s private Facebook page.
  3. Looking for schools? Charter school, private school or public school? The decision can be daunting.  A+ Schools is also a great organization to help you with all the application processes and registration. Read their report to the community to see how schools in Pittsburgh stack up.
  4. Looking for stuff to do with kids in Pittsburgh?  Go to Kidsburgh
  5. Need to find an Black doctor in Pittsburgh?  Click here.
  6. Need daycare? Check out our listing of Black-Owned child care centers in the Pittsburgh region. Also, here’s a childcare locator.
  7. For after-school programs check out the Brown Mama’s Guide to After School Programming in Pittsburgh.
  8. One of America’s favorite past times is going to the park.  Pittsburgh has some amazing parks and trails.  Wanna explore? Click here.
  9. And, here are a few city festivals that no Brown Mama wants to miss: Annual Summer Reading Extravaganza at Carnegie Library , the Lawrenceville Cookie Tour, the Black Family Reunion, Pittsburgh Jazz Festival (great date night!), the Annual Northside Pumpkin Fest and the Children’s Festival, Riverview Heritage Day Festival, Harambee Festival.
  10. Need financial, maternal or mental health services?  Check out our BIG List of Resources for Moms.
  11. Need groceries?  Try the Pittsburgh Farmer’s Market.  I know how hard it is to change grocery stores.  Not knowing what aisle items are in and not knowing which grocery stores are great and which ones suck are a few of the things I hate about switching.  Here in Pittsburgh Aldis is king, but Giant Eagle also has great fresh produce if you don’t mind spending a few extra dollars.  Check out the Flipp app to find other local stores (and sales).  We also have Shop n’ Save, Trader Joe’s & Whole Foods.
  12. If you are looking to live in the city, some great brown mama friendly neighborhoods to look at are East Liberty, Garfield, the Hill District and Point Breeze, the North Side (that’s where I live & it’s HUGE). (City life is tricky right now as the entire city is under construction — gentrification!)  Also, be sure to use the residential social app NextDoor to get the lowdown on just about every neighborhood in the ‘Burgh.
  13. If you happen to have an ACCESS card, here are some inexpensive ways to have fun in the city.  I mean real cheap.  You can get into most museums for $3 per person.
Need anything else.  Just ask by emailing us at pghbrownmamas@gmail.com.  Don’t forget to subscribe to stay abreast of meetups and visit our About Page for more info.
